Mayor of London - Electric vehicle trial

THE MAYOR OF LONDON 2,5-YEARS TRIAL HAS SUCCESSFULLY SHOWN THE ENEFITS OF VOLTIA ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS IN LONDON.

Bratislava / London, 29 April 2020 – The Mayor of London tested, over a two-and-a-half-year trial (July 2017-December 2019), a set of innovative new vans that shall be added to their existing fleet of fully electric vehicles (EVs) in order to contribute to reducing air pollution. The trial vans’ emissions performance was tested against comparable diesel delivery vans. This pilot project concluded that, in terms of operational performance, cost, vehicle emissions and impact on the grid, cargo EVs offer an operationally competitive and environmentally friendly fleet alternative todiesel vans. Speaking about Voltia, their vans used significantly less energy per km than the diesels and small EVs and compared favourably with the small EVs in terms of distance travelled and productivity.

 

Commercial freight vehicles represent 30 percent of all traffic in central London and make an estimated 281,000 journeys per day. To address this, the Mayor’s Office teamed up with Gnewt, Voltia’s UK partner, on a two-and-a-half-year trial to test the performance of electric delivery vans in central London without further contributing to the air pollution problem. State-of-the-art vehicles consisting of Nissan Voltia eNV200s (first generation with 24kWh battery; hereafter referred to as ‘Voltia’), Nissan Vic-Young modified eNV200s (hereafter referred to as Vic-Young) and BD Auto eDucato’s were tested against comparable diesel delivery vans on the environmental emissions performance, range, energy consumed and more. Altogether, there were 26 trial vehicles in the mentioned project.

The London trial concluded that, in terms of operational performance, cost, vehicle emissions and impact on the grid, cargo EVs offer an operationally competitive and environmentally friendly fleet alternative to diesel vans.

KEY FINDINGS

1. The overall electricity cost for charging the trial vans was 75% less than the fuel costs to run their diesel equivalents (2019 costs).

2. Socio-environmental benefits associated with electric vans replacing diesel equivalents (including cutting greenhouse gas emissions) equate to an estimated 1.8p to 2.6p benefit, per km driven, to Greater London.

3. The Voltia used significantly less energy per km than the diesels and small EVs and compared favourably with the small EVs in terms of distance travelled and productivity, thanks to the newer and more efficient powertrain.

4. The trial Voltia used five times less energy per km than its diesel equivalents.

5. Trial EVs travelled 20% further, on average per week, than the small non-trial EVs. Of all trial EVs, the Voltia travelled the greatest distance.

6. The trial EVs, with their larger payload volumes, delivered, on average, 30% more parcels per week compared to the smaller vehicles – helping to reduce congestion by making fewer trips. The Voltia showed a 34% increase in parcel deliveries per week, on average, when comparing them to baseline vehicles.

7. On average, one day of last mile deliveries used approximately 30% of the battery’s charge.

8. Voltia was about 20% less expensive to operate than its diesel equivalents.

9. Drivers rated the overall satisfaction for the Voltia vans as 4.2 out of 5.0 (performance, cargo capacity, noise, loading/unloading as 4.5; safety at 4.3; vehicle reliability, comfort, maintenance, refuelling/charging, parking as 4.0).

10. Currently, 112,000 e-vans can replace 281,000 diesel vans daily journeys in London.

Notice: Data from three trial electric light goods vehicle (LGV) models was gathered over a two-year period and analysed against data compiled from a baseline trial operated with comparable diesel vehicles.

The report concludes that the Voltia is a quiet, comfortable, low emission cargo van with mid-sized cargo space and excellent mileage. The van has an energy use of 92 MJ/100km. It is ideal for urban environments which require less range for delivery operations and contain tighter parking spaces.

As the trial project of the Mayor of London started in 2017 and tested the first generation of Voltia Vans with the 24kWh battery, there have been 3 years of continuous improvements and a new 40kwh battery. This van, with a range up to 200 km (124 miles), is available on the market for GBP 29,899. It is now produced in the UK and Ireland thanks to a partnership agreement with the Bevan Group to assemble and market the vehicle there.

ABOUT MAYOR OF LONDON & GNEWT ELECTRIC VEHICLE TRIAL

The objective of the project, prepared by engineering & consultancy ARUP) in cooperation with fleet telematics company Fleetcarma Technology, was to find available technologies to help urban delivery companies switch to electric and demonstrate how to do so. The Trial compared three types of EVs against comparable diesel vans, in delivery operations. The four main areas of focus were: 1) Operational performance, 2) EV operating costs, in practice, 3) Charging Infrastructure and Grid Analysis, 4) Key barriers to the adoption of EVs.
